THE ONE NEW MAN SYMBOL

Dr. Audrey L. Dickey, Los Angeles, CA

The One New Man symbol is the earliest known  grafted-in Christian symbol.  It combines the Menorah, the Star of David, and a Fish. The unity of these three symbols united together are one unique symbol of faith, hope, love and two people groups as one in Messiah as they represent the unity and common roots of Judaism and Christianity.

The symbol is a menorah or a seven-branched candlestick that was designed by God Himself and the pattern for it was imparted to Moses, Exodus 25:31-40.

            What the menorah symbolizes
is God’s Holy Spirit and the Spirit’s presence in the earth through His church, Zech. 4:2-6, Rev. 4:5; Revelation 1:20, 21.

Two menorahs are used by the Jewish people. One is a seven branch menorah that holds seven candles. The candle in the center of the lampstand is called the “Lamp of the Lord.” It is also used to light the other candles.

The other lampstand has nine branches and it is called a Hanukiah and it is used at Hanukkah. It is a special menorah (lampstand) that Jewish people and many Believers (Christians) light each year that has eight candles representing the number of days it would take in order to rededicate the temple to God. At the time of the miracle of light there was only enough oil to burn the candles for one day but it miraculously burned on its own for eight days. And an additional ninth candle is placed on the Hanukiah in the middle of the lamp and is higher than the other eight.

The ninth candle is called the “Servant” (Shammash) candle on the Hanukiah menorah and is used to light the other eight, so too, Yeshua is the Light of the world and has made His followers to be “supernatural lights” to the world! Matthew 5:14-16 AMP “You are the light of the world…let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your  praiseworthy, noble and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.”

Between the two menorahs this is a picture of Yeshua (Jesus); He is the Lord, but He came as a Servant to lay down His life and release God’s ‘Blessing’ in the earth! His shed blood redeemed mankind for eternity which is eternal life!

What the fish symbolizes is that it represents that Jesus made His disciples fishers of men.  Fisher of men in Greek is halieis anthropon and it means that fishers of men are not limited to only men but all of humanity. Today fisherman would be the standard word to use instead of fisher. Nevertheless, it basically means that Jesus’ disciples were sent to save souls (disciples working to catch souls for Jesus as they had previously caught fish for their businesses). It symbolizes catching many souls because in those days they used nets to bring in a large number fish. Therefore, it became a symbol that you were a follower of the Messiah (Christ) and you were anointed to lead soul(s) from darkness into the light, Matthew 4:18, 19; Mark 1:17; John 21:1-15.

The symbol that brings the menorah and the fish together is the Star of David.
This is located in the middle of the other two symbols. Even though the Star of David in itself has no religious content or scriptural basis it is known in Hebrew as the Shield of David or Magen David. It is a recognized symbol of modern Jewish identity and it represents Judaism as a whole rather than as an individual community. The Star of David has a long history but will be confined to the point being made today.

The One New Man symbol ties together or vavs (connects) the menorah and the fish bringing reconciliation and fulfillment of the old covenant law or instructions with the new covenant.
In addition, one of the things the two triangles symbolize are fire and water two of the symbols that are used for Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead (Trinity) Genesis 1:26 and Who Jesus/Yeshua baptized others with. So John the Baptist baptized with water and Jesus baptized with fire (power) both were baptizing with the Holy Spirit to bring power in those disciples’ lives so they could live a life for the True and Living God, John 1:33-34.

The hexagram, double triangle of the Star of David symbolizes the connection of both dimensions of God, Torah and Israel. It symbolizes unity and harmony. In alchemy, the two triangles symbolize “fire” and “water” together they represent the reconciliation of opposites. The Star of David also had other uses such as being widely regarded as a Messianic symbol, because of its legendary connection with David, ancestor of the Messiah. And in the 6th Century C.E. legends connect this symbol with the Seal of Solomon, the magical signet ring used by him to control demons and spirits.
